EJ Interview with Joseph Volpe

The interview with Joseph Volpe, in the January 2007 English Journal section 3, suggests many things to me. Joseph Volpe's carrier from an apprentice capenter to the general manager of the New york's Metropolitan Opera is of course interesting. And also, his attirude for his carrier or his life impressed me.
After he was asked the reason why he decided to quit the general manager of the MET, he answered this question as he loves challenges. And he added as follows,

I like challenges, so I'd like new problems. So anywhere there are new problems, that's where I would be, I will go.

After his answer, the interviewee, Ms. Miki Kano, asked what attributes his succeed to. I was very impressed his answer to this question, this answer is kind of similar to Niccolo Machiavelli's thought in "Il Principe".

I'm certainly aggressive about being successful. Pursuing excellence is very important, and it's a journey. And I don't think one ever acheives total excellence, but you have to be prepared for that journey, and never be satisfied with all of your accomplishments, because once you're satisfied, then you're actually going the other way - you're going backwards.

I strongly agree with the idea keeping aggressive or pursuing forward. In many fields, of cource my job, electrical engineering - my major field - and English, I have to keep this idea. Althought pursuing excellences is a hard goal, if I give up this, my performances will get worse than now. Recently, I think mentality or attitude is one of the important aspects of somebody's character. But how do I keep this aggressive or pursuing attitude?
