English Journal May 2007 Issue

When I came home yesterday, I found English Journal June 2007 Issue in my post. I finished EJ May 2007 issue, but I haven't written about this issue in my diary. I'll write about this issue below.
The first section is Leonardo DiCaprio interview. He talked about his latest works, "Blood Diamond". This film is about diamond trade in Africa and problems around the trade. He talked about his research for his role in this film. He talked as below,

You know, I really, you know, there's only a certain amount that you can get from books. And, um, you need to speak with the real people and ask specific questions that affect your character, questions you have about your character, otherwise you'd be skimming through hundreds of books trying to get that specific answer.

These his statements include truth. In his situation, asking people must be the most efficient method to acheive his goal. For each purpose, we should adopt the proper method to get the most important information. For example, if you want something you can get web site, using google might be the most efficient way and reading books or asking somebody might be in vain. If you reseach something happened in tha past and somebody researched about it, reading books migth be the most efficient way, because you can't ask somebody who did it or knows it directly. Selecting methods you apply is really important in research. Before starting getting resources, we have to analyze our situation and decide on a tactics for carring out the reaserch.

The second section is an interview of John Gray, who is a writer and wrote about relationship with men and women. His opinion about working women who feel comfortable in working places was intersting for me. Making environment which women produce oxytocin, which is female hormone for delivering babies, making babies and regulating sexuality. To produce oxytcin, we take care of making environment like below.

When a woman is in a cooperative environment, a sharing environment, a communicating environment, a mutually supportive environment - as opposed to a more hostile, competitive, goal-oriented environment - then oxytocin gets produced.

If I have a chance to work with women, I'll try this method.
And in this interview, John Gray uses the word "available" in this sentence.

Now, first of all, the older you get, the less men are available.

The image of word "available" is different from 「利用できる」 in Japanese, but is there some common image between these two words for this meaning?

The third section is Global Management Interview of Kimberly Wiefling. She talked about leadership skills. Many people tend to think that great leader must have extrovertial character. But as a fact, many leaders don't have.

Leader ship is about continuing in the face of fear and being committed to your goals, even if you're afraid, even if you are worried that you may not succeed or other people won't like it, because you care more about the goals than the approval of other people and your own comfort.

She adds listening skill is important for leadres, although it seems passive skill and it is not appropriate skill for leaders. She said the reason as below,

If I am speaking, and no one's listening. I quickly colse down my ideas. That's why generous listening is so powerful. It allows me to overcome my own self-limitin behavior.

In order to communicate smoothly and know what he/she thinks, listening is essential, but can I do this effectively? I have to check my listening style and I think I need to change my listening style.
