English Journal Oct. 2007 issue

The 1st interview of EJ this month issue is Orland Bloom interview. He talked about pirates torilogies and his carrer as an actor. He also talked about environmental problems. He suggested one important idea for environmental problems.

The environment is such a massive issue that we all, kind of, think it's doom and gloom. You know, it's all or nothing. But actually, I don't think that's the case. You can be somebody who drives an SUV. That's fine, but there's a balance. So if you do that, then maybe use energy-efficient light bulbs at home, or just be conscious of switching off lights. If you can afford to drive an SUV, maybe you can afford to make a donation to a wind farm or a, you know, or plant some trees or ... it's all about balance, you know.

His opinion that balance is important for environment problems is interesting. Many people conscious about environment problems recently, but many people, including me, might not know how much energy they consume and how much energy ther produce with clean energy. In order to progress Orland's idea, analyzing current situation for each people, such as quantity of energy consuming, might be important.

And the 2nd interview is an interview with Catherine Makino. She is a journalist for VOA. She talked about VOA, interviewing in Japan, current media situation and so on. In this interview, she talked her interview style.

As a journalist, I think you should not be judgemental even if you're interviewing someone that has done horrible things. During the interview I think you should just look at the person without judging the person. And then, of course, afterwards you'll have your feelings, what you really think, 'cause we're human, and we have opinions and ideas. I feel it's really important to do that.

When I meet somebody who I see the first time, I asked about them and I tend to judge what they are while interviewing or doing works with them. These judegements are sometimes useful but they are not. As she said, I can have an opinion or feelings after interviews. Interviewing somebody without prejudice might be useful, so next time, I'll try that.

She also talked about Japanese and Chinese situation for US media.

Japan is becoming less interesting also to the United States. After September 11, I notices a big change here, because America's focused on Iraq, on Iran, on the Bush administration, rather than Japan right now.
A lot of my colleagues have moved to China. China is like the growing dragon, absolutely.

Her phrase "growing dragon" is an interesting words. Many people point out Chinese growth and problems there. How much the dragon will grow in the future?
